Aluminum Series · narrow sightlines · Title 24

Milgard aluminum windows, and why we talk most people out of them.

Aluminium buys you the narrowest frame and the longest span. It also conducts heat, which is why California treats it carefully — and why it is the right answer less often than people expect.

The frame most Valley houses are replacing

If your house was built between about 1960 and 1990, the windows in it are almost certainly aluminium, and they are the reason you are on this page. Bare aluminium conducts heat extremely well, which is exactly what you do not want in a window frame. That is why a west-facing aluminium window is hot to touch at four in the afternoon, and why the frame sweats on a cold morning.

So there is an obvious question: if aluminium is the problem, why does Milgard still sell an aluminium line, and why would we ever install one?

What aluminium is genuinely better at

Strength per inch of frame. Aluminium holds a large sheet of glass with far less material around it than vinyl or fiberglass needs, which buys you two things.

Narrow sightlines. More glass, less frame, for the same rough opening. On a mid-century house with long horizontal window runs, a vinyl replacement can look heavy and wrong in a way that is hard to unsee. Aluminium keeps the proportions the architect drew.

Span. Very large fixed panels and long slider runs are simply easier in aluminium.

There is also the matching problem. If you are replacing four windows on one elevation of a house that has twenty aluminium windows, putting vinyl in those four will show.

The Title 24 problem, honestly

California’s energy code sets a maximum U-Factor for replacement windows. U-Factor measures how readily heat moves through the whole assembly, frame included — and an aluminium frame is a highway for heat unless it has a thermal break, an insulating barrier splitting the inside half of the frame from the outside half.

The practical consequence is that aluminium is the hardest frame material to get compliant, and the products that do comply cost more than the vinyl equivalent rather than less. Anyone quoting you cheap aluminium replacement windows in Los Angeles is worth a careful question about which NFRC numbers the units carry.

We will not guess at those numbers on a web page. Ask us for the specific configuration you are considering and we will give you the rated U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient in writing, on the quote, before you order anything.

So when do we actually recommend it?

Three situations, and they are narrower than most people expect.

Architectural match. A mid-century or modern house where a chunky vinyl frame would be visibly wrong, and the owner cares about that.

Openings vinyl cannot do well. Spans large enough that a vinyl frame gets bulky or needs a post through the middle of your view.

Partial replacement on an aluminium house, where consistency across an elevation matters more than the performance difference on four windows.

Outside those, we will steer you to Style Line or, if you want a slim frame with better numbers, Trinsic — or to fiberglass Ultra Series, which gets you closer to aluminium’s slimness while behaving properly in heat. That is usually the conversation worth having.

The ones people actually call about

Questions homeowners ask

Are aluminium windows legal in California?

Yes, but the specific unit has to meet Title 24's maximum U-Factor like any other window, and a bare aluminium frame struggles to. Compliant aluminium windows use a thermal break — an insulating barrier through the frame — and they cost more than the vinyl equivalent, not less. If someone is offering cheap aluminium replacements here, ask which NFRC numbers they carry.

Why are aluminium windows worse at insulating?

Because aluminium conducts heat roughly a thousand times better than vinyl does. U-Factor rates the whole assembly including the frame, so even with good glass an untreated aluminium frame drags the number down. It is also why the frame itself gets hot to touch on a west wall and why condensation forms on it first.

Should I replace aluminium windows with aluminium windows?

Usually not. Most people on this page are replacing 1970s aluminium precisely because of how it performs, and going back to aluminium keeps some of that problem. The exceptions are an architectural match on a mid-century house, spans too large for vinyl, or replacing part of an elevation where consistency matters.

What is a thermal break?

An insulating barrier built into the middle of the frame so the inside face is not metallically connected to the outside face. It is what makes an aluminium window able to meet code. Without one you have a conductive metal path straight through your wall.

What is the slimmest frame that still performs well?

In vinyl, Trinsic. In fiberglass, Ultra Series — fiberglass is stronger than vinyl so the frame can be slimmer, and it barely moves in Valley heat, which also means it holds a dark exterior colour without bowing. Between them they cover most of what people actually want from aluminium.
